Iraq; Desertification, Drought and Storms

Article

This article discusses how Iraq's once abundant and balanced climate, characterized by plentiful rainfall, snowmelt, and thriving ecosystems like palm forests and marshes, has deteriorated due to global warming and dam construction. These changes have led to increased drought, desertification, and storms, creating new tensions in the Middle East and highlighting the need for regional cooperation to address these environmental challenges....

ABSTRACT

Previously, Iraq was characterized by a distinct climate through the abundance of rainfall and snowing weather in the winter, especially in the north of the country, which in its falling quantities enriches the summer season heat, which is without rainfall. In fact, Iraq used to have a number of floods in the spring season almost every year as a result of the abundance of water in its canals and rivers due to the melting of those snows And the large amount of rainfall, and this abundance of water contributed to the emergence of palm forests in the center and south of Iraq, which acted as a good deterrent to various storms, in addition to maintaining acceptable weather in the summer, and we should not forget the presence of marshes in the south of the country Which provides an atmosphere of moisture and prevents desertification and sand dunes.

However, the global changes in the climate and the effects of global warming or what we called it (greenhouse effect) and the construction of dams led as a result to some countries being strongly affected by these environmental and climatic changes, and Iraq was one of those countries that fell under the influence of drought and desertification, as well as the various kind of storms that are currently affecting all joints of the state in Iraq and neighboring countries. All these refers to a new kind of Tension in the Middle East. All these variables make it imperative for Iraq and the countries of the region to work together for the purpose of coming up with a result to protect the region from the tensions that may arise due to the climate and its variables.
