The ‘Security in East Mediterranean’ Workshop, the first event within the scope of the East Mediterranean Program initiated by the TASAM National Defence and Security Institute (NDSI) and the National Security University - Near East South Asia Strategic Studies Center (NESA) affiliated to the US Ministry of Defense, is held at Sheraton Istanbul City Center on 17-19 July 2023 with institutional participation of invited official and civil think tanks from the countries of the region.

The East Mediterranean Program, as a proactive and leading initiative in shaping the strategic agenda of the region, together with the NATO ally the USA, in order to contribute strategically to Türkiye's sensitive security and economic priorities in the East Mediterranean; It will continue to be based in Istanbul between 2023 and 2025. The sub-themes of the program; “Great Powers’ Relations and Competition“, “Counter-Terrorism and Asymmetric Threats“, “Open and Independent Common Domains“, “US Security Engagement and Assurance Vision“, “Regional Powers and Governance of Competition“, “Economic Development, Political Stability and Regional Cooperation“, “Arab-Israel Peace Process“, “Cyprus“, “Climate Change, Economy and Energy Security“.

In order to reduce the tension between regional powers in the current conjuncture, to promote peace and stability among them, to deepen understanding and cooperation with friendly and allied countries; It is important that distinguished civil society representatives, especially from think tanks and universities from all Mediterranean countries, come together and discuss issues of mutual interest. Even the ability to reduce tensions in this way is expected to contribute to "confidence building measures" between nations.

The ‘Security in East Mediterranean’ Workshop, an initial event of Security Studies in the East Mediterranean under the Program, conducted by NESA and TASAM to promote effective communication and strategic capacity through free and candid dialogue in a civil and academic environment, will last for three days, starting Monday, July 17, 2023. Opening speeches of the workshop were made by NESA executives Dr. Gawdat BAHGAT and Dr. Roger KANGAS and TASAM Founding Chairman Süleyman SENSOY, and in the sessions the topics of " Türkiye after the Election", "Regional Reconciliation", “Global Powers“, “Israel“, “Iran“, “Domestic and Regional Challenges“ and “The Way Forward“ are primarily discussed.

The international workshop, attended by qualified representatives at strategic institutional levels from the East Mediterranean countries, is held with “Chatham House rule“ and closed to audience participation.
