The report has aimed at examining the impact, based on data, of the trade between China and Turkey on the Turkey’s export to and trade with other countries, and how the cultural/financial/commercial cooperations and relations between both countries may be shaped after Covid-19 under the “Belt and Road Initiative“ by using different alternative approaches.
However, the purpose of the report is not only to analyze the impact of the import made from China to Turkey on the Turkey’s export to other countries, but also to bring out the opportunities in tourism, investment, finance and technology sectors and analyze the post-Covid-19 Turkey - China relations in the dimensions, such as politics and security etc.
Turkey has been progressively gaining importance in the international arena with its 80 million population, growing and developing economy, geo-strategic position that it has in the middle of Afro-Eurasia continent, historical, political and cultural ties with the countries in Europe, Black Sea, Caucasia, Asia, Middle East and Africa, ever-increasing activity in international arena as the United Nations in the first place, it being one of the important members of the organizations, such as NATO, AGIT and CICA, and active foreign policy developed in the recent period.
The People’s Republic of China has turned into a fast growing power, with which all the world try to make great effort to get into partnership, with its surface area, 1.4 billion population, progress achieved in industrialization and technology, growing and developing economy, natural sources, veto power in the United Nations, place in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and strategies developed in foreign policy.
The Turkey-China relations have a deep-rooted background by means of the Silk Road, and date back to 2.000 BC. The bilateral relations preserved its vitality until 1.400’s through the Silk Road. In the meantime, the diplomatic relations between both countries could be re-established as late as 1971 due to the necessities of the Cold War period. Until recently, the harmonious and cooperative periods were relatively scarce.
In the recent period, both countries have been developing an effective strategic cooperation in terms of the sustainability of the critical long-term interests. The military and cultural dimensions have particular importance in order for the China-Turkey relations to be carried into an ideal point within the multi-dimensional world power systematic.
Turkey and China have common interests in the Central Asia and the Middle East in the fields of geopolitics and security. When energy security and ever-increasing terrorist activities are taken into consideration, providing peace and security in these regions are necessary for both countries’ interests.
China’s “Belt and Road Initiative“, which has a potential of being a global impact, includes important structural perspectives for Turkey and its neighboring regions. At this point, the bilateral and multilateral analysis of the economic goals, which could not leap forward due to the trade imbalance-centered developments, and the development of new radical parameters will bring out the real potential of mutual dependence.
With an emphatic approach to the priorities, apart from merely the trade, of both sides that focus on the existent unlimited potential in the fields, such as tourism, investment, finance, technology and security capacity, making comparative researches with impact analysis and maturing all results and opinions with a workshop, which brings all the actors together right after, has been taken as a first stage.
The purpose of the project is to present the opportunities and the complementariness relationship in the China and Turkey relations in the new period intended for the Turkish and Chinese decision makers from a strategic point of view without neglecting the problematic areas, and to establish an institutional and intellectual ground.
